The Effects of Social Media on Education: Weighting the Impacts

I chose to do my paper on the impacts of social media on education. Over the years social media has become bigger and bigger. With most generations using social media platforms, it can be said that it has affected our daily lives to a great extent. With education being one of the most important aspects of youth, I think it is important to discuss how social networks are impacting students and their education, and how it will continue to do so. My analyses will focus on giving both negative and positive aspects of social networks on students and how this impacts their educational setting. For example, social media has become a great distraction to students, which in some circumstances, causes their performance to decline. I plan to include some studies to support this analysis. On the other hand, social media networks encourage students to engage with each other and share their creativity. In addition, I would also like to touch on the challenges of students using social media such as privacy concerns, health issues and friendships. These are just some of the impacts that I would like to discuss in my paper. I plan to analyze all the effects and conclude with what measures can be taken to ease the negative factors and take advantage of the positive aspects of socials media.

  1. I like this topic a lot because social media does take up a lot of people's time especially the younger generation. I believe people tend to forget that social media shows the highlight of people's lives and we never know what someone's going through. For me, social media has educated me a lot especially Twitter because my timeline is a variety of topics like politics, education, health and more. The negative aspects you can talk about comments and how harmful people are to others just because of their appearance( a recent example with Chadwick Boseman).

  3. Hi Maria!
Just looking at the topic alone drew my attention to your blog. During this pandemic, a lot of people have to do online schooling such as ourselves and my younger sister who is only 5 years old. While she is only 5 I am convinced that she has more experience on social media than I do, mainly on Tik Tok. You said that social media has become a distraction to students and I can see that through her. This topic is one of great importance, especially now. I'm looking forward to reading more from you on this topic. I would love to learn about how social media is not only affecting me, but also my sister.
